Survey Results:

2008 was the second year  for  conducting health surveys of the participants of the health fair at the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education's 101st Annual Convention.

Geographically, in 2008, participants came from all parts of the United States with largest number from Texas, Missouri and Tennessee.

The largest age group attending was 41 - 60, followed by 61 - 75 years of age, with over 67% female, which is typical in most African American churches.

73%  of the respondents have attended and gotten screened at a health fair, and 62% have health ministries in their churches.  Almost 58% said they would attend health fairs at other churches if offered.  This is encouraging in that this opens doors for expanded health education among the individual National Baptist churches.

We patched questions about clinical trials into the surveys, and our surveyors observed emotional responses to some questions  during the surveys.   Some people gave extensive commentary - both pro and con-- about – pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and their  own likelihood of participating in clinical trials.

Almost 64% believe that clinical trials are safe, while nearly 30% believe they are VERY safe.   Surprisingly, only 24% thought clinical trials were NOT SAFE AT ALL.

The 64% that were on the line mostly cited that there was not enough education about clinical trials, and 20%  responded that NO ONE ASKED them to participate.

In the question related to the  "conditions under which they would participate in a clinical trials," it did not seem to matter to almost a third as to whether the trial they participated in was government or pharmaceutical sponsored.  However, what DID matter was that they needed more education about both the disease condition  and more frank discussions about the  clinical trial.
