Prostate Cancer 101 Lecture Series

Prostate Cancer 101 Dinner Lecture Series made an historic debut in Philadelphia in 2004, then in Detroit in 2005. The disease of focus was prostate cancer. Presented around the country by the National Physician & Family Referral Project (NPFR), and hosted locally by such organizations as AARP Michigan, LINKS, Inc. Pan Hellenic Council, NAACP, Urban League and American Cancer Society.

The Lecture Series is designed for patient education. It features panels of doctors, community health advocates and noted prostate cancer survivors discussing prostate cancer, various treatment options, BPH, Erectile Dysfunction and quality of life, Advanced Prostate Cancer, Incontinence and Colon health. In selected cities, clinical trials education is also offered.

Like 50 Hoops, the educational outreach begins weeks before the actual event
And event education surveys are charted for Sponsors to measure results

Prostate Cancer 101 Lecture Series is targeted to community and religious leaders with constituencies in a forum with Media anchors.  Panels of influential speakers talk candidly to these leaders about prostate cancer. Sometimes the Speakers are televised or taped for future radio health airing.   National and local physicians, urologists, and healthy lifestyles specialists who focus on Quality of Life form a dinner discussion panel.

The Dinner Lecture Series was taken from the old English University Dinner Lecture Series, where discussions begin along with the serving of dinner.  Each course has a different discussion topic (appetizer, salads, Entrée’, dessert, coffee), and by the time coffee is served, the panel is assembled for Q&A.

Discussions may include prostate cancer- discovery through treatment options, Erectile Dysfunction, Incontinence, Advanced Prostate Cancer, Diet, Fitness and Exercise, Clinical Trials and Cancer Prevention.  This unique program supplements the 50 Hoops educational offerings and expands into intervention and addressing disparities.  The “Call To Action” is used to recruit for a local Prostate Cancer Coalition in cities around the country. These coalitions meet quarterly, for an educational event such as dinner, picnic, walks, celebrity workshops, etc.  They identify prostate cancer survivors who will support outreach, partner with African American networks and individuals on local coalition. Three coalitions are already set up.

OUTCOMES:
Utilizing the vast network 50 Hoops and NPFR already have in place; a national resource of prostate cancer support groups, survivors, physicians, hospitals and families of survivors can be put into place. Our goal is to create small local consortiums within selected communities around the country.

The 2009 NPFR Prostate Cancer 101 Dinner Lecture Series is a strategy for  (1) Educating the community about prostate cancer and other prostate-related issues such as new trends, procedures, clinical trials, etc. (2) Joining community and religious leaders with physicians and medical professionals to identify and eliminate racial disparities in prostate cancer, and to design models for future community participation and engagement in this process.

New! Other Patient Education Series that support and enhance Our Patient Outreach and Education

2009 begins another new event for NPFR:  A community boxed lunch program entitled, “ PATIENTS IN DISPARITY TOWN MEETINGS.”   It is a series of town meetings featuring local celebrities, survivors, doctors and community leaders in a “by invitation only” patient and physician intervention exchange about disparities.  New treatment options for selected disease topics will be explained and educational literature distributed about the diseases and clinical trials.    Surveys are taken with the goal to further identify opportunities for intervention, based upon  health network availability.
